“Don’t get hooked.”
On Valentine’s Day at Lover’s Lane, an adulterous couple is brutally attacked by a serial killer known as “The Hook,” while another couple manages to escape and get him sent to an institution for the criminally insane. 13 years later, “The Hook” manages to escape and begins attacking the kids of the murdered couple. Filmed in Seattle, Issaquah, and Snoqualmie, and notably the film debut of Anna Faris (SCARY MOVIE, THE HOUSE BUNNY), Jon Steven Ward’s LOVERS LANE is a video store horror gem that is defiantly no frills for a 2000 slasher released in the wake of post-SCREAM deconstructionist slashers. It combines the holiday-set horror of HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13TH with a small-town “sins of our fathers” motif à la A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - and some giallo for good measure - for a slasher that does exactly what it says on the box.
LOVERS LANE is presented as part of The Unstreamables, a monthly series that features the weirdest and wildest genre films that are not available for rent, purchase, or streaming on a digital platform.
